Main principles (continued):
Make sure there are no underlying problems which can damage self-esteem, such as bullying at school, learning difficulties, problems with peers etc.

If a problem exists, it is much better to talk about it as a family, rather than deny or over-react to it. Do not 'attack' the issue, but tackle it firmly and be as understanding as possible. Most young people are experimenting and may not realise the worry they are causing.

Don't assume that "other people's children are drinking but mine wouldn't". Most young people have at least tried a drink and many have experienced drunkenness. At least if you are aware that your child is drinking, you can raise the subject and offer guidelines.

A moderate level of disapproval which identifies the potential dangers of alcohol, yet recognises that most young people will drink, is probably the most beneficial.

Persistent conflict and arguments can be extremely damaging to children and may prove counterproductive.

If you do recognise a problem, don't deny it or over-react to it. If your child feels unable to talk to you, perhaps you can involve another family member, teacher or family friend.

Do not try to speak about the problem if your teenager arrives home drunk - it is unlikely that they will listen. They are likely to be irritable, irrational and will lack concentration or cohesion.
Rather, broach the issue the next day or at a time when both parties have time to talk and think.

Young people do experiment. It is part of growing up. However, when drinking becomes a habit or binge drinking occurs, parental or guardian intervention becomes necessary.
